A Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan was suggested by the Central Sanskrit Board, which was established by the Sanskrit Commission in 1956–1957. In light of this, the Sansthan was founded on October 15th, 1970 as an independent organisation registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 (Act XXI of 1860) for the growth and promotion of Sanskrit both domestically and internationally. It served as the primary organisation for the advancement of Sanskrit and helped the Ministry of Human Resource Development create and carry out a number of plans and programmes for the advancement of Sanskrit studies. It was entirely funded by the Government of India.

The Sanskrit Commission was established in 1956 by the Government of India's Ministry of Education to consider the propagation and development of Sanskrit language and education in all of its aspects. The Sansthan was fully funded by the Government of India and operates as a vital Central Government agency under the Ministry of Education / Ministry of Human Resource Development. In 2002, the Ministry of Human Resource Development's Department of Higher & Secondary Education, Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi, declared Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan itself, along with its constituent campuses, as a Deemed University on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission. This was done through notification No. 9-28/2000-U.3 dated May 7, 2002.
